Evidence of a preprogrammed deactivation of the hamstring muscles for triggering rapid changes of posture in humans

Normal subjects were asked to make rapid flexions of the legs from a stationary initial standing posture in a self-paced mode. Because this movement implicates a rapid change in posture, questions were asked about the type of central command which must include the rupture of the erect posture and the accomplishment of the goal directed movement. Movements of the different segments of the body were recorded and analyzed using the optoelectronic ELITE system. Influence of aging on the mechanical behavior of leg extensor muscles.

Age dependence of the mechanical behavior of leg extensor muscle was investigated using vertical jumps with and without a stretch-shortening cycle on the force-platform. A total 226 subjects (113 females and 113 males) ranging in age from 4--73 years were examined. The results indicated in general that performance in males was better than that in females. This difference was reduced when body weight was taken into consideration. Occupations of Housing and Social Centers in Rome: A Durable Resistance to Neoliberalism and Institutionalization

Squatting for housing and social centers has a long tradition in Rome since the end of the 1960s. By the mid-1970s, the occupation of buildings to set up political and social activities became part of the repertoire of left radical movements. In this chapter a set of 34 squatted spaces for housing and social centers in Rome active in 2014 is analysed. Squatting practices thus provide a lens to interpret the evolution of urban struggles, urban development and the changing sociopolitical contexts. Knee osteoarthritis in former runners, soccer players, weight lifters, and shooters.

Objective. To determine the relationship between different physical loading conditions and findings of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods. We selected 117 male former top-level athletes (age range 45–68 years) who had participated in sports activities with distinctly different loading conditions: 28 had been long-distance runners, 31 soccer players, 29 weight lifters, and 29 shooters. Histories of lifetime occupational and athletic knee loading, knee injuries, and knee symptoms were obtained, and subjects were examined clinically and radiographically for knee findings of OA. Electromechanical behaviour of human muscles in vertical jumps

The relationships of muscle structure to the potentiation of myoelectrical activity and to the use of prestretching in five lower limb muscles were studied in different vertical jumping conditions. The subjects for the study were six male students, divided according to the muscle fiber distribution in m. vastus lateralis into “fast” and “slow” groups. Squatting is usually subject to institutionalisation, co-optation and repression. Legalisation of the squats is also a controversial issue among activists. This chapter provides an overview of these topics in Central-Northern European cities (Berlin, Copenhagen and Paris) and Southern European cities (Madrid, Barcelona and Rome).
